‘The great purpose of
landscape art is to make us at home in our own country’.
Artists, architects, writers
and designers respond to the above quote which is an ‘algomaxim’ - a term coined by The Group of Seven, a group of Canadian painters to express their sentiments about art. The Group of Seven were drawn together by their similar styles and interest in the depicting the Canadian landscape and throughout the 1920's they travelled across the country, capturing the natural beauty of the great outdoors. Today they are iconic figures of Canadian painting and heavily influence many artists today, including Peter Doig.
This exhibition includes work by established and emerging artists, working in a wide range of styles and media to explore the concept that landscape art serves a purpose to establish our sense of belonging and identity.
